  • Translation

    • CAT tools and translation memories

      1. How do CAT tools and translation memories work?

The translation is stored in a database. This database can be used during the translation process to translate identical or similar sections of text. When a document is updated or when similar documents are being translated, the translator can reuse existing translations.

The system identifies not only identical but also similar sentences in the source text. This means that, in the case of a similar sentence, the translator only has to modify the proposed translation.

As well as the translation database, a terminology tool can also be used. This ensures that the most important terms are always translated correctly.

      2. What are the benefits of working in this way?

The use of CAT tools and translation memories guarantees that the translation is consistent, because it allows the translator access to the existing translated text.

We pass our cost savings on to our customers. In the case of updates to existing documents, this can result in significant cost reductions.

      3. Who owns the translation memory?

The translation memory resulting from the translation process belongs to you. You can pass the memory on to other service providers, so that you can make use of the existing translations.

    • Layout

      1. What happens to the layout during the translation?

The use of layout filters ensures that the layout information does not become lost during the translation process. This also significantly reduces the work involved in formatting the translated files.

In practice this means that you can supply us with FrameMaker, Word, InDesign or QuarkXpress files and we can return the translations to you in the same format. Of course, we can also provide you with print-ready files (including PDFs), if required. On single-source projects we also create and test foreign-language online help in the required format.

    • Charges

      1. How do you charge for translations?

We charge on the basis of the word count. The files for translation are analyzed using the customer's existing translation database (memory). This allows us to determine the volume of new, similar and existing sentences and words.

There is a price for each of these categories, so the analysis allows us to calculate the total cost for translation.

    • Quality

      1. How does caron guarantee the quality of the translations?

Quality is our main priority. Our quality management system has ISO 9001:2000 certification. In the area of translation we also comply with the DIN EN 15038 standard. What does this mean in practice?

The European DIN EN 15038 standard applies to translation services. The main requirements are as follows:

        • The translation service provider must have a documented quality management system (for example, ISO 9001:200).
        • The process for selecting external translators must be strictly controlled.
        • The translations are proofread by a second independent person.
        • The translation projects are managed using an independent project management system.
